Welcome to the Wine Blog

 Welcome to my wine blog! My name is Michael Vrinceanu, and I’m a senior biology major.

Wine played a very large role in my family’s eastern European culture and religion, so I have been around wine for a pretty long time, but didn't try it for a while. Over time, I became more and more curious about wine, and when I tried it, I found out that I really liked it. Based on my limited experience so far, I think I prefer red wines such as merlot and red blends. But I don’t think I have tried enough white wines to have a solid opinion on them, so this is one of the many things that I’d like to explore more in this class.

Since I’m a college student who hasn’t had a lot of money to spare on quality wines, the majority of my wine purchases and experiences have consisted of Barefoot-level wines. And while these tasted really good to me, I know that these types of wines are only a small portion of wines on the market. So I’m hoping that this class introduces me to a wider variety of wines, because I would really like to know why some brands of wine are considered high-class and are expensive, while other types and brands can be bought for under ten dollars.

Most of the time in the past, I wasn’t really thinking about the wines I was drinking, so I wasn’t evaluating the different taste profiles and details of a wine. However, I’ve recently started to have it more with dinner, especially at holiday dinners or special occasions with my family, and I’ve found that this is a very ideal setting for drinking wine. It also has helped me get a better idea of which types of wine I like. Another thing that I hope to learn through this class is why certain types of wine pair well with certain foods, so that I can better enjoy wine at dinner. I’m looking forward to taking this class and becoming more knowledgeable and experienced with wine.
